We have had a busy and productive week in Year 1. The children completed some lovely writing based around the story of ‘Tiddler’ and also enjoyed learning about different oceans in our new IPC topic.
The Week Ahead
Phonics Screening Check
Throughout the week, the children will be taking part in the Phonics Screening Check. The purpose of the check is to provide evidence of the children’s decoding and blending skills. It aims to identify the children who need extra help with particular sounds or blends so that we are able to support them in improving their reading skills. The test comprises a list of 40 words and non-words/alien words. Your child will read one-to-one with their teacher. The check takes approximately 10 minutes. We aim to make the process as relaxed and enjoyable as possible for the children.
In Literacy, we will be reading lots of different poems. The children will be writing some of their own ‘Who am I?’ poems, which they will edit and publish. Towards the end of the week they will then be writing their own acrostic poem based on sea creatures.
In Maths, we will learn about fractions. The children will be finding half of different shapes, identifying half of a shape and using halving to find and sort odd and even numbers.
The link below will take you to a game called ‘Hit the Button’. If you select ‘halving’, the children can practise halving numbers up to 10. They may benefit from using counters or concrete objects to assist them in working out the answers.
In IPC we will be learning about rainfall and looking at how some areas receive more rain than others. We will also talk about drought and its effects on plants, animals and people.
